Hi Jenni Not having trouble...yet we've only been trying for about 6 months. Im on a very low dose 2.5 and 5mg on alternate days. Am still having painful flare ups so I think they'll suggest an increase. I'd read that steroids can intefere with your cycle and i'd tried an ovulation test and it keeps coming up negative. have booked a GP appointment next week. I guess i'm so fed up with RA intefering in my life I wanted something to be straight forward Clairexx

hi
Definately see the GP and explain that you have a "short window of time to TTC" (due to very limited DMARD options to control the RA) and you need to know whether you or your other half have any fertility issues.
We bought a sperm count test online and when we used that and the ovulation kit we knew we had a problem.
The GP will arrange a 14 and 21 day blood test of your cycle, and will repeat it. My first one was negative but the second was positive so we knew I was ovulating.
There is a drug called Clomid which makes sure you ovulate.
I think this has to be prescribed through a fertility specialist.
I would say that if you are in a lot of pain, having a DEPO jab is likely to help for a few months.
All the best and enjoy the practice!

Hi,
I definitely agree that steroids affect your cycle too.
I have never taken oral steroids anyway but even the occasional jab either into a joint or the behind can cause uptold problems with fertility and my cycle...
I would go and ask the GP about this...perhaps you could try one of the other meds which is suitable for pregnancy instead of the steroids..
Love,
Amanda

Hi All Not been on here for a while now. I was doing ok, but deciding to try and concieve I was advised to come off my sulphalsine. So I have been drug free for 5 months so far, and I am suffering because of that. Its hard for me to know what to do for the best. I chose sulphalasine because I was told you can be on it when pregnant and it didnt affect fertility. I have read advice to avoid ibobrufen due to effects it can have on follicle development, and I have booked to see my GP to enquire about a steriod injection. However I read here that this messes with you cycle. I'm beginning to think its best to be in a little pain, than risk delaying conception and or taking risks that may harm. I'm not as bad as I was before diagnosis and medication in Sept 2008, but has anyone got any suggestions as to what I can do to reduce pain without effecting conception etc? Thanks, Louise

Hi Louise
First of all wishing you the very best with ttc.
I think you really need to talk to your GP and rheummy team about the pain question. What suits one person may not suit another and I most certainly wouldn't take anything recommended by anyone else "over the counter"
Take care and let us know how things go.
Lots of love Jeanxxx

HI Louise I've been on steroids since august last year, am having regular periods and ovulation tests are positive every month. I had long discussions with my consultant when deciding on the treatment route and everyone is affected in different ways. My friend with RA couldn't concieve on steroids as they disrupted her cycle. I tried a brief (a week!) period without steroids and the pain and inflammation was unbearable. In relation to anti inflammatories, I was advised by the consultant to stay off them. I would get as much advice from your consultant as possible, and do what you feel comfortable with. Good Luck Clairex

Hi,
I am expecting and I came off the mtx in Sept and fell pregnant in the February whilst still taking slz and hydro.
I decided at 7 weeks pregnant to come off them both too and so far I have been pretty okay although my knees are swollen and hurt a little, as do elbows and hip is twinging.
As this is a high risk pregnancy I have already been strongly advised to return to taking the hydro- I would definitely prefer this over the slz. Or there is Azothriprine too.
I also found steroid jabs messed with my cycles to the point where I was having three week menstruations.......
I am also adamant I do not want to take low dose steroids at all and will choose hydro if I am made to.
It is very hard to know what to do for the best I'm afraid. I cannot help thinking nothing is best but then we have RA and must take care as any inflammation is not good at all.
Love,
Amanda

Hi Yes its not an easy choice is it Amanda sorry hear your knees, elbows, hips twingy. I would happliy have the Hydroxycholrquine while preggy, ttc steriods i had injection march none since im keen not to as since jab ive been having 2 periods a month at 1 week each with pain ehavy bleeds(i have endometriois ). Im planning start trying in November when return from long holiday i will have 1 more steriod injection few weeks before go away. and hope not to have any more so cycles can regulate again in time for ttc. Im planin also come off anti inflammtories in late october. curently having to have 1000 mg anti inflammtoires a day but think some of that is infection of tooth causing more inflammation gp did agree it would be so once thats healed im going discuss goign down to 200mg twice daily. how was gp appointment claire? cuddly cats make my world seem so much more fun

How are you doing on just anti-inflams? is the RA and Lupus bearable?
Mine is definitely bearable, if not much better already but I have bad days and when I do it scares me the CRP has shot up as that's no good....I see the rheumy mext week so have dedided he'll be the one I'll listen to! (perhaps!LOL)

Hi On Planequil also at 400mg daily, not doing awfully but not doing great either alot more pain, inflammtion no idea as no bloods being done. got see gp soon for blood test. yes rheumy is 1 i shall listen to aswell about meds, lupus and ra have not been playing ball but then ive had dental abscess for the 2 months ive been on methotrexate. so think till thats healed hard to say for sure. alot more pain in fingers, toes elbows the kind pain only had before when in full flare. so see what bloods show up. so in nutshell id say only bearable becasue im taking strong painkillers, whereas 3 months ago pain had gone down to point was taking only 4 or 2/8500 co codamol. im now on 30/500 co cdoamol 2 or 1 3 times daily plus i have fibro which is very painful so still no amtirpline grr. melly cuddly cats make my world seem so much more fun

Hi Mel since my first post, i seemed to turn a corner and have had positive ovulation tests, so had a long discussion with the GP and have decided to keep trying for another few months as the steroids don't seem to be affecting my cycle at the moment. Cx

Hi All Thanks for the advice, good to know there are other women out there ttc with RA. I'm off to the doctors tonight. Are co-codamol better to use if ttc? What is hydro? and Planequil? Shall I ask about those for me? Louise
